ASTS faces structural challenges: high debt, valuation risk, unproven technical capabilities (satellite handoff), and weak competitive positioning against SpaceX and Amazon. Use case (voice on satellite phones) outdated.
debt and valuation risk; no technical data on data handoff (critical distributed systems challenge); voice use case obsolete; text-based communication dominant; SpaceX D2D and local Starlink dishes superior alternatives; backers dying, 30-year zero growth market; company supported only for relevance
There is a lot of expectation riding on $ASTS given the debt, and valuation. The world is dynamic - SpaceX, Amazon are huge threats. They have NOT provided any technical data on data handoff (multiple satellites handing off to the client, eg latency, throughput). That is arguable one the hardest thing to do in distributed systems (I should know, my masters of engineering was on it). Then use case don't make sense. No one does voice anymore. Most is done via text so SpaceX doing D2D makes a lot sense. There are also alternative solutions like using a local Starlink dish, and distribute the communication. Like people use on boat, why would people need it on a phone. Your backers are dying. I have a graph showing for 30 years, it's a zero growth business. They are supporting purely out relevancy.
